Well those of you who read people's stats will know that I recetly decided to save up and buy an electric guitar. A few of you actually helpfully suggested brands. Well I went to the music store again today, for what I initially only thought would be a little jam session. Then I found out they were having a sale on guitars and drums. So as of around two this afternoon I became the proud owner of a brand new Ibanez electric complete with gig bag, amplifier, picks, a tuer (although probably not one that's accessible), and basically everything I need to get started. Of course living in a studio apartment does mean I can't crank it up and rock the house, but keeping the volume down is proving easy enough so far. Needless to say I think I'll be making regular trips to this music store for little jam sessions. Good way to make friends if you ask me. And I figure amming with other people might be more helpful to me than lessos at the stage I'm at in my guitar playing. I'm not really an amature but nor am I really a virtuoso. I also think I might bring the therimin in there and play from time to time since a music store is somewhat ore likely to have the space I need for that than my apartment. A therimin generally needs to have at least five or six feet free around it in order to be played properly because of the electromagnetic field it generates. Guess we'll just have to see what happens. Guess it's back to the Ibanez...

Congrats! I've yet to see an accessible tuner. I'm not sure if this is good or bad, but I have nearly perfect pitch, so I don't worry about them for that reason. Its always nice finding a music store where you feel at home.

Hmm, congrats on the guitar, what type of Ibanez is it and how much did you pay for the packge (if you don't mind idsclosing). I find Smashing Pumpkins' the Siameses dream first track the perfect way to tune to E and do relative tuning after that. Tuners are ok but I've never found an accessible one, not to mention that really you have to ever-so-slightly detune some of the strings to make the guitar sound good as a whole.
I've never heard of a music store that actually welcome jamming, they tolerate it if they think it leads to a sale but, wow, one that actually expects people to bring in their stuff to play in the store, that's a new one.
Ibanez are generally pretty good, the low end are a bit too 3-doors-down sounding for me, I prefer single coil pick ups, the PRS Soapbar is the best sub $500 guitar I've ever seen, I have a Fender Jaguar reissue, which is just a beautifully sounding instrument. I used to have a semi hollow body but found it just a tad bit too aggressive.
I want a PRS Custom-22 or 24 for electric, I have a Tyalor 324 acoustic but a friend is custom building a guitar for me simulating the Martin OM series, the best sounding guitars I've ever touched or had the honor to play. Music stores are often reluctant to even let you touch of one them, they're in the 2 grand range, but if you get a chance to play one try it out, it's unbelievable.
cheers

Well the package was about 275 bucks, which is pretty good considering buying all the components separately would likely have cost more. I got the guitar, a gig bag, the amp (just a small one but it works for my space), some picks, the patch cord, a shoulder strap and the tuner. I have a sneaking suspicion it also came with one of those whammy bars (I'e also heard it called a waa waa bar), but there doesn't seem to be aywhere to put it on the guitar. But then again I may jst be issing something. But yeah, Dunkley seems to encourage jam sessions because the folks there understand that most people don't generally feel comfortable just buying something like this outright. They got really excited when I told them I also have a therimin. They actually told me I ought to bring it in. Then I also have a Yamaha acoustic I've had for about nine years.

I'll get back to you in a PM about where to fit the wammy bar on there. He used to have an electric guitar. I'm not sure what happened to it, though.

I'd appreciate that.
